In the year 2021, over 100 people have been shot and killed in the Birmingham area, one being close to home on the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s campus.
Some may say that guns are not well controlled but, Republican lawmakers in Alabama have presented six new bills this year to protect themselves from any restrictions on gun rights that may come down from Washington.
An article on AL.com written by Mary Clare Jalonick said, “Democrats said Tuesday that they are pushing toward a vote on expanded gun control measures as the nation reels from its second mass shooting in a week.”
Due to multiple different mass shootings/shootings occurring in the United States, President Biden has begun banning assault weapons and becoming stricter on background checks for gun sales.
According to another article written by AL.com, “Now is the time for conservatives to plant our flag for the cause of freedom and push back on any and all proposals that seeks to limit the 2nd Amendment.”
As you may read a lot of people are wanting to grant freedom and allow gun sales to carry on, others are wanting to implement more restrictions.
Some may wonder which option would have helped Destiny Washington, a 20-year-old nursing student at UAB who was in her car at the Student Hill Center when she was shot and killed.
My immediate thought to this incident was “did the man who shot and killed her have a license to carry a concealed weapon? Why did this happen? Could it have been avoided?”
The scary thing is we will never truly know the answers but we can try our best to prevent it from happening in the future by tightening up on who can and cannot carry a concealed weapon.
